Adolescence is considered as a period of stress and storm in which teenagers go through different physical, emotional, social and cognitive changes. In this period, teaching life skills is very crucial for these teachings will help the teenagers in coping with the problems they might face in life. The government feels the need to conduct life skill trainings to empower adolescents to acquire knowledge of their needs and concerns related to the period of adolescence and develop life skills that enables them to practice informed and responsible behaviours.
Intending to drive a collaborative effort to strengthen this initiative, the Meghalaya Institute of Governance (MIG) launched the ‘Building Young Leaders by Empowering Adolescent Boys and Girls with Transformational Life Skills’ programme which provides support to the schools and traditional village institutions across Meghalaya by conducting training programme for youths between the age of 13-18 years through citizen engagement, creation of necessary research, training modules, case studies, and organizing joint knowledge events and trainings among others.
MIG along with the District Schools Education Officer (DSEO) identifies specific schools that comply with the criteria required for conducting this programme. The selected schools further choose potential teachers who plays a vital role in mobilizing adolescent boys and girls from their respective schools to undergo the transformational life skill development trainings. The selected teachers are trained for a period of five days after which they disseminate the knowledge and train the adolescent boys and girls in their respective schools.
In the first phase, a total of 5000 adolescent boys and girls are expected to be trained across the districts of Meghalaya. The training duration for the adolescent is three months approximately.

Acknowledging and recognizing the hard work undertaken by the students during the training program is an incentive of this felicitation program. Adolescence is characterized by pronounced changes in motivated behavior, during which emphasis on potential rewards may result in an increased tendency to approach things that are novel and bring potential for positive reinforcement. Having a felicitation program thus brings a positive outcome to the work put in by the adolescents and they feel more inclined to further the work.
